What size SSD should you buy for PS5?
For most players, 2TB is the useful middle ground: enough breathing room for a substantial library without paying the steepest cost per drive.

The quick answer
Choose 1TB for a smaller rotating library, 2TB for the best balance, and 4TB only when you keep many large games installed. Capacity does not replace compatibility: Sony requires a supported PCIe Gen4 x4 M.2 NVMe SSD and effective heat dissipation.
Start with Sony’s requirements
The drive must be an M.2 NVMe model—not M.2 SATA—with a cooling structure such as a heatsink. Sony currently supports capacities from 250GB through 8TB and recommends sequential read speed of 5,500MB/s or faster. The drive and heatsink must also fit the published size limits.
| Capacity | Best fit | Main tradeoff |
|---|---|---|
| 1TB | Budget-focused player who deletes finished games | Can fill quickly with large releases |
| 2TB | Most regular PS5 owners | Costs more upfront than 1TB |
| 4TB | Large library and slow internet or data caps | Higher total cost |
Heatsink or no heatsink?
A model with a correctly sized built-in heatsink is the simplest purchase. Sony says not to stack an extra heatsink onto a drive that already includes one. If buying a bare drive, include the cost and dimensions of a compatible cooling structure before comparing value.
Do not confuse USB storage with M.2 storage
PS5 games can be played directly from compatible internal M.2 storage. USB extended storage can hold PS5 games, but they must be copied back to console or M.2 storage to play. That makes an internal drive more convenient for an actively used PS5 library.
